Fifth Annual Fire Fighter Challenge is Best Ever |
| Stiff competition and supportive crowds highlighted the Bluefield
Fire Department's fifth annual Fire Fighter Challenge held May 29 at the Midway in City
Park, as part of the 1999 Mountain Festival. Twenty-one fire fighters from throughout southern West Virginia participated in the event, and many took home trophies for their efforts. Kevin Pennington, of the Bluewell VFD recorded the fastest time. Kevin ran through the five strenuous stations in a blazing time of 1:40.72. Second place in the individual competition was Beckley fire fighter Rick Fisher, with a time of 1:45.40, and third went to Josh Roberts of the Tazewell VFD, who posted a mark of 1:57.84. New this year to the competition was a Junior Division, in which 16-year old Charles Harris from Anawalt VFD ran through a slightly modified course in an amazing time of 3:13.04! Berwind VFD fire fighter J.J. Johnson took home the Over-40 honors with a time of 2:28.25. In the team competition, Beckley Fire Department took home the first place honors with a combined flaming time of 5:54.36. The Beckley team consisted of Mike Peck, Rick Fisher and Jeremy Dillon. Congratulations! The three-man team from the Town of Tazewell VFD posted a combined time of 6:20.84 to take second place. The Tazewell team consisted of Josh Roberts, Junior Pilkins and Robbie Hamilton. Bluewell VFD, made up of Mike Gibson, Kevin Crane and Kevin Pennington placed third with a combined time of 7:00.69. A total of seven teams were eligible to compete. Nine departments were represented overall in the Challenge.
